“He tells everyone he gave up his life to take care of her.”
Her eyes returned to me.
“But he never tells them what happened before the crash.”
My heart started racing.
“What happened?”
Allison swallowed.
“The night before your accident…”
“I saw Derek arguing with you.”
Derek immediately stepped forward.
“Stop.”
But Allison continued.
“You were crying.”
“You told him you wanted a divorce.”
The yard erupted with whispers.
My breath caught.
Because that was true.
The night before the accident…
I had discovered something.
Something I never told anyone.
Derek had been hiding money.
Secret accounts.
Messages.
A relationship I wasn’t supposed to know about.
I confronted him.
And he promised we would “talk tomorrow.”
But tomorrow never came.
Because my car went off the road.
Derek’s face became pale.
“You’re making things up.”
Allison shook her head.
“No.”
“I’m finally telling the truth.”
She pointed toward the house.
“Because I saw something else.”
Everyone looked at her.
“The morning after the crash…”
“I saw Derek in the garage.”
My fingers tightened against the ground.
“What was he doing?”
Allison hesitated.
Then said:
“He was looking at your car.”
A chill went through me.
“He wasn’t crying.”
