Too desperate.
Allison looked up at him.
And for the first time…
she wasn’t intimidated.
“You should have thought about that before you did this.”
Derek’s jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Allison looked back at me.
“I do.”
A pause.
“Because I was there.”
Three years earlier…
I had been driving home from work.
It was raining.
The roads were dangerous.
At least…
that was what everyone believed.
That night changed my life.
One moment, I was a woman making plans for the future.
The next…
I woke up in a hospital unable to move my legs.
The doctors told me my spine had suffered severe damage.
They called it a tragic accident.
Derek cried beside my hospital bed.
He held my hand.
He told reporters:
“I’ll never leave her.”
“I’ll take care of her for the rest of my life.”
Everyone called him a hero.
A devoted husband.
A man who stayed when things got difficult.
And I believed him.
Because I loved him.
Because I trusted him.
Because I never imagined the person comforting me…
was the same person who might have caused my pain.
Allison looked toward the crowd.
“Everyone here thinks Derek saved her.”
Nobody spoke.
