“He wasn’t panicking.”
“He wasn’t calling for help.”
“He was searching.”
Nobody laughed anymore.
Nobody looked away.
The same people who had watched Derek drag me across the yard…
were now watching him realize his story was collapsing.
Derek looked around.
“You’re all going to believe her?”
Nobody answered.
That was the worst part.
Silence.
Because silence used to protect him.
But now…
silence was condemning him.
Then Kevin, the man standing near the fence, suddenly spoke.
“I saw something too.”
Derek turned.
“Kevin.”
A warning.
Kevin looked uncomfortable.
But he didn’t stop.
“The night of the accident…”
He looked at me.
“I thought it was strange.”
“What was?”
Kevin swallowed.
“Your car.”
“What about it?”
“The brakes.”
My heart stopped.
“What about the brakes?”
Kevin looked at Derek.
“They didn’t fail.”
The entire yard froze.
Derek’s expression changed instantly.
Because Kevin wasn’t supposed to know that.
I looked at my husband.
The man who spent three years convincing everyone he was my protector.
The man who stood beside my wheelchair and accepted praise.
The man who cried for cameras.
“Derek…”
My voice shook.
“Did you know?”
He didn’t answer.
