Seven-Layer Taco Salad

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.

Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks.

Drain any excess grease.

Add the taco seasoning and the amount of water recommended on the seasoning packet. Stir well and simmer for several minutes until the beef is thoroughly coated and the mixture has thickened.

Remove from the heat and allow the beef to cool.

Step 2: Prepare the Dressing

In a small bowl, combine the sour cream and salsa or taco sauce.

Stir until smooth and evenly blended.

For extra taco flavor, you can add a little additional taco seasoning, chili powder, or freshly ground black pepper.

Step 3: Prepare the Vegetables

Wash and chop the lettuce.

Dice the tomatoes and bell pepper.

Drain and rinse the black beans thoroughly.

Dice the avocado just before assembling the salad so it stays fresh.

Step 4: Start the Layers

Use a large clear glass serving bowl so everyone can see the colorful layers.

Begin with a layer of chopped lettuce.

Add the diced bell pepper over the lettuce, followed by the black beans.

Next, add a layer of the cooled taco-seasoned ground beef.

Step 5: Add the Creamy Layer

Spoon the sour cream and salsa mixture over the beef.

Spread it gently with the back of a spoon to create an even layer.

This creamy layer adds richness and helps balance the savory taco-seasoned meat.

Step 6: Add the Cheese and Toppings

Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the creamy layer.

Add the diced tomatoes and avocado on top.

Finish with chopped green onions, fresh cilantro, or a few crushed tortilla chips if desired.

For the best crunch, you can also serve extra tortilla chips on the side rather than adding all of them to the bowl ahead of time.

Step 7: Chill and Serve

Cover the salad and refrigerate for about 30 minutes before serving.

When you’re ready to eat, serve it with a large spoon so each portion includes several of the delicious layers.

For the best texture, add tortilla chips immediately before serving. This keeps them crisp instead of allowing them to become soggy.

This seven-layer taco salad is an easy crowd-pleaser that can be prepared ahead of time and customized with your favorite taco toppings. Add jalapeños for heat, swap cheddar for Monterey Jack, or top it with sliced olives and extra salsa for even more flavor. 🌮🥗🧀
