Eggshells have recently become popular in homemade wellness recipes, especially in recipes promoted for knee pain, bone discomfort, and joint stiffness. The reason is easy to understand: eggshells are largely made of calcium carbonate, an important mineral for maintaining normal bones.
However, eating homemade eggshell preparations is not the same as taking a properly manufactured calcium supplement. Eggshells can contain bacteria if they are not handled and processed safely, and pieces that are not finely processed can also be unpleasant or potentially irritating. More importantly, there is no good evidence that an eggshell remedy can quickly eliminate arthritis or severe knee pain.
If you want to support your bones and joints, there are safer ways to include calcium in your diet.
A Simple Calcium-Rich Breakfast
Instead of consuming eggshells, try this simple combination:
- 1 boiled egg
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- A small handful of almonds
- Fresh fruit such as berries or a banana
The egg provides protein and several nutrients, while yogurt is a convenient source of calcium. Chia seeds and almonds can also contribute minerals and healthy fats.
