What Your Earwax May Reveal About Your Health

Gray earwax may come from environmental dust

If you notice gray earwax on a cotton swab, one possible explanation is exposure to dust in the surrounding environment. This may be particularly noticeable in places where the air contains more pollution or airborne particles, including large cities.

As the ear’s natural wax helps trap material that enters the outer part of the ear canal, particles from the environment can become mixed with it. When this happens, the earwax may appear darker, duller, or more gray than expected.

This makes the context important. A person who spends a great deal of time in a dusty or polluted environment may notice an appearance that differs from someone living or working in cleaner surroundings. In such a situation, the gray color may simply reflect the particles that have become incorporated into the wax rather than a significant change in the wax itself.

The color should therefore be considered alongside other factors rather than interpreted on its own. A single observation of gray earwax, particularly when there are no other noticeable changes, may have a straightforward environmental explanation.

Genetics can also influence earwax

The second explanation given in the original article is genetics. Earwax characteristics are not the same across all people, and inherited traits can influence whether it is naturally dry or moist as well as its usual appearance.

According to the Hearing Guide by Bruno Frachet and Émilie Vormés, earwax is genetically determined. This means that differences between individuals can be normal and may have nothing to do with hygiene or a health problem.

The article gives a clear example of this genetic variation. Asians and Native Americans are described as more commonly having dry, gray earwax, while Caucasians and Africans are described as more commonly having moist, honey-brown earwax.

These natural differences are useful to understand because they show why comparing your earwax directly with someone else’s may not tell you very much. What looks unusual in one person may simply be normal in another.

Texture is just as relevant as color in this example. Dry, gray earwax has a noticeably different appearance from moist, honey-brown earwax, yet the difference can reflect inherited characteristics rather than a sudden change in health.

For that reason, knowing what is normal for your own ears can be more meaningful than expecting everyone’s earwax to look the same. A long-standing appearance that has remained consistent is different from a sudden and unexplained change in color or texture.
