Vaseline for Dry, Mature Skin: What It Can and Can’t Do

Vaseline can make wrinkles look less noticeable temporarily by reducing dryness and improving the skin’s surface appearance.

It cannot, however, erase established wrinkles, restore lost collagen, or produce the same effect as professional cosmetic treatments.

For long-term skin aging, daily sunscreen is much more important. Sun exposure contributes significantly to premature skin aging, so protecting the face from ultraviolet radiation should be part of a consistent skincare routine.

Is Vaseline Safe for the Face?

Plain petroleum jelly is generally well tolerated and can be useful for protecting dry or irritated skin.

If you are prone to acne or folliculitis, however, you may prefer to use it only on dry areas rather than covering the entire face. Stop using it if you develop irritation or an unusual reaction.

Avoid putting petroleum jelly directly into the eyes.

The Bottom Line

Vaseline can be an inexpensive way to lock in moisture and temporarily make dry, fine-lined skin appear smoother. But it isn’t a miracle wrinkle treatment, and there is no reliable evidence that it can make facial creases disappear in three minutes or permanently tighten skin overnight.

For healthier-looking mature skin, a simple routine of gentle cleansing, moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and consistent skincare is a much more realistic approach than relying on a single overnight remedy.
