Thyme: A Traditional Herb With More Uses Than You Might Expect

Thyme is one of the most familiar herbs in the kitchen, but its history goes far beyond seasoning food. For generations, thyme has been used in traditional herbal preparations, particularly for respiratory complaints associated with colds. Today, it remains popular as a tea, culinary herb, and ingredient in natural wellness routines.

Online posts sometimes describe thyme as a powerful natural cure for parasites, urinary tract infections, bladder infections, herpes, influenza, Candida, arthritis, sciatica, and almost every type of joint pain. These claims go far beyond what has been established for thyme. Evidence and traditional medicinal use are much narrower, with thyme preparations recognized in European herbal medicine primarily for coughs associated with colds.

One of the simplest ways to enjoy thyme is as a warm herbal tea. Add about one teaspoon of dried culinary thyme to a cup of freshly boiled water, cover it, and allow it to steep for approximately 5 to 10 minutes. Strain the leaves and enjoy the tea while warm. A small amount of honey can be added for flavor if desired.

Thyme tea can be a comforting drink during cold weather, especially when you have a scratchy throat or an unpleasant cough. It should be viewed as a soothing beverage rather than a substitute for medical treatment.

Thyme also contains naturally occurring aromatic compounds that have attracted scientific interest. Laboratory research has examined some of these compounds for antimicrobial and other biological activities, but laboratory findings do not automatically mean that drinking thyme tea can eliminate an infection inside the human body.

This distinction is especially important when it comes to urinary tract infections. Burning urination, frequent urination, pelvic discomfort, fever, back pain, or blood in the urine can require proper medical evaluation. A homemade herbal drink should not be relied upon to eliminate a bacterial urinary infection.
