“Who?”
“My Aunt Aisha.”
My sister had called me earlier that morning, asking several strange questions about Franklin’s past.
At the time, I hadn’t understood why.
Now Elijah told me that she had discovered information that might explain why the financial irregularities had begun months before we ever suspected an affair.
“What could Aisha possibly know?” I asked.
Elijah hesitated.
“Mom, I think Dad has been hiding something much bigger than his relationship with Madison.”
Before I could respond, a car pulled into the driveway.
Aisha stepped out, carrying a thick envelope.
She looked toward the house, then directly at us.
The moment she saw my face, her expression softened.
“Oh, sweetheart,” she whispered. “I’m so sorry.”
I rushed toward her.
“What is it? What have you found?”
She glanced toward the living room, where Franklin and Madison were still unaware of the approaching disaster.
Then she opened the envelope.
Inside were copies of old financial documents, letters, and records connected to a company Franklin had once claimed to have left years earlier.
Aisha looked at Elijah.
“Your father told your mother that business had failed. He said he lost everything and had to start over.”
Elijah nodded slowly.
“I remember him talking about it.”
“Well, these records suggest the story wasn’t that simple.”
She handed me the first page.
I recognized Franklin’s signature immediately.
But the date made my stomach turn.
The document had been signed years before the financial transfers we had just discovered.
And the name listed beside his wasn’t Madison’s.
It belonged to someone I had believed was no longer connected to our family.
I looked up at my sister.
“Who is this person?”
Aisha took a shaky breath.
“Someone your husband has been protecting for a very long time.”
At that moment, a voice called from inside the house.
“Mom? Aunt Aisha? The ceremony is about to begin!”
It was Elijah’s best man.
Guests were already arriving. The musicians were preparing to play, and Madison would soon walk down the aisle believing that her future was secure.
I looked at my son.
“Whatever happens today, I don’t want you to make a decision you’ll regret.”
He took my hand.
“I’m not going to let their actions decide the rest of my life.”
Then he looked at the envelope.
“But before I marry Madison, I need to know the entire truth.”
Aisha nodded.
“Then there’s one more thing you need to see.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a final document.
The moment Elijah read the name at the top, his expression changed.
He looked at me, then toward the living room where his father was waiting.
“Mom,” he whispered, “this changes everything.”
And just as the wedding guests began taking their seats, my sister revealed the one secret Franklin had spent decades trying to keep buried.
It wasn’t only about the affair. It wasn’t only about the missing money. It was about a decision Franklin had made long before Elijah ever met Madison—and the consequences were finally catching up with him.
The ceremony was about to begin.
But before anyone could say, “I do,” our family would have to face a truth that might change all our lives forever.
