PART 2 — WHAT WAS UNDER THE CAST
The cast came away in two pieces.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then Clara screamed.
She dropped the cast onto the sterile floor and stumbled backward.
Marcus swore under his breath.
I stared at the boy’s arm.
The skin underneath was severely swollen and discolored, with areas of damaged tissue and deep pressure marks. The smell that had been trapped inside the cast filled the room.
But that wasn’t what made Clara scream.
Something small and dark fell from the inside of the cast and landed on the floor.
Then another.
And another.
They weren’t pieces of bone.
They weren’t medical gauze.
They were small objects wrapped in layers of filthy cloth.
I looked at Martha.
Her face had gone completely white.
“What are those?”
She didn’t answer.
I turned to Marcus.
“Don’t touch anything. Photograph it.”
He grabbed his phone.
The first object was a child’s sock.
The second was a small plastic bag containing several tablets.
The third was a folded piece of paper.
I picked up the paper with forceps.
It was a handwritten note.
Only four words were visible.
PLEASE HELP MY SON.
I looked at Martha.
“Who wrote this?”
She started crying.
“His father.”
I froze.
“Where is his father?”
She said nothing.
I looked at security.
“Keep her here.”
Then I turned back toward the boy.
“Let’s stabilize him.”
The next several minutes became a blur.
IV antibiotics.
Fluids.
Blood cultures.
Pain control.
Emergency imaging.
Surgery was called immediately.
The orthopedic surgeon arrived and took one look at the arm.
“We’re going to the operating room.”
I nodded.
Then I noticed something else.
There were older bruises on the boy’s shoulders.
Healing injuries.
Some recent.
Some not.
This wasn’t an accident.
This had been happening for a long time.
I turned toward Martha.
“How did he break his arm?”
She whispered:
“Fell.”
“From where?”
“A tree.”
“Which tree?”
She stared at me.
I waited.
She couldn’t answer.
“Mrs. Harris, your son is eight years old. If you don’t tell us what happened, someone else will.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
Then she whispered:
“It wasn’t a tree.”
The room went silent.
“What happened?”
Martha looked toward her son.
“I did it.”
Clara covered her mouth.
I felt my stomach drop.
“Why?”
Martha began shaking.
“Because he wouldn’t stop talking.”
