It’s been a year now.
The divorce was finalized in the spring. Daniel moved out of the house, and I kept it, because my name was on the deed and because I had paid for most of it with the savings I brought into the marriage. He didn’t fight me as hard as I expected. I think he understood, by the end, that fighting would only make things worse for him.
Laura and Michael are also divorced. I don’t know the details of their settlement, and I don’t need to. Michael sends me a card every Christmas. It just says « Thank you » and his name. I keep them in a drawer.
I went back to work at the law firm last fall. Patricia offered me a position, and I took it. It’s strange how a career can feel like a room you walked out of years ago and can still walk back into, as though it had been waiting for you the whole time.
Daniel called me a few months ago. He sounded tired. He asked how I was doing, and I told him the truth, which was that I was doing well, and that I had started running in the mornings, and that I had planted tomatoes in the back garden. He said that sounded nice. We talked for a few minutes, and then I told him I had to go, and I meant it.
I don’t hate him anymore. I don’t think I ever really did. What I felt in those first weeks was something closer to grief — the grief of realizing that the person I had spent eleven years building a life with was not the person I had believed him to be. That is a loss of its own kind, and it deserves to be mourned.
But the flowers are the thing I think about most. They arrived at the wrong house, on the wrong day, for the wrong reason, and they changed everything. I don’t believe in signs. I don’t believe the universe sends messages.
But I do believe that sometimes a mistake is not a mistake at all. Sometimes it’s just the truth, arriving exactly where it was always meant to go.
And if you are the woman sitting in her living room right now, staring at a bouquet that was never meant for her — I want you to know something.
You are not the one who was careless. He was.
And you are going to be okay.
