The Dog They Threw Away

I named her Hope. It felt like the only thing I could give her that didn’t cost anything.

The first week was touch and go. She wouldn’t eat. She wouldn’t move. She just lay there, shivering, her eyes half-closed. I slept on the floor beside her kennel, talking to her, telling her she was safe, telling her she never had to be afraid again.

Then one morning, I brought her some scrambled eggs. She lifted her head. She sniffed. And she took a bite. Just a tiny one. But it was enough.

The vet was cautiously optimistic. “She’s starting to turn around. But she’s still fragile. She needs time.”

I took her to the vet every week. The bills piled up. I sold my guitar. I canceled my gym membership. I ate ramen for dinner so I could afford her medication. I never once regretted it.

One night, I was sitting on the floor with Hope curled up beside me. I stroked her head and whispered, “You know, you saved me too. I was wandering around like a lost dog before I found you.”

She looked up at me with those tired eyes. And for the first time, her tail wagged.
