Onion Oil for Hair Loss: What It Can—and Cannot—Do

Hair thinning around the crown is extremely common, particularly with age. When people notice more hair falling out or a wider-looking part, it is natural to look for a simple home remedy.

Onion oil is often promoted online as a natural treatment that can stop shedding and restore thick hair within a day or two. However, claims that onion oil can reverse decades of hair loss or restore scalp density in 36 hours are not supported by good evidence.

That doesn’t mean onion-based preparations are useless. Onion juice has been studied for certain types of hair loss, but the evidence is limited and it should not be confused with a proven treatment for common pattern hair loss.

Why Does Hair Thin at the Crown?

Hair loss can have many causes.

One of the most common in older adults is androgenetic alopecia, also called male-pattern or female-pattern hair loss. In this condition, genetically susceptible hair follicles gradually become smaller, producing thinner and shorter hairs over time.

Other causes include:

  • Stress or illness
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Thyroid problems
  • Certain medications
  • Hormonal changes
  • Scalp inflammation
  • Alopecia areata
  • Excessive hairstyling or chemical treatments

Understanding the cause is important because different types of hair loss require different approaches.

What About Onion?

Onions contain sulfur-containing compounds and various plant chemicals, which has led researchers to investigate whether onion preparations might have a role in hair and scalp health.

A small study has reported improvement in hair regrowth with topical onion juice in people with alopecia areata, an autoimmune form of patchy hair loss.

That finding does not establish onion oil as a treatment for genetic crown thinning.

Most importantly, it doesn’t show that hair density can return overnight.
