Old-School Egg Custard Pie

1. Prepare the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the unbaked pie crust in a 9-inch pie dish.

2. Make the custard

In a large bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until smooth.

Add the whole milk, vanilla, salt, and melted butter if using. Whisk gently until everything is fully combined.

3. Fill the crust

Pour the custard mixture carefully into the prepared pie crust.

Sprinkle the nutmeg evenly over the surface.

4. Bake

Place the pie on the center rack and bake for approximately 45–55 minutes.

The edges should be set while the center still has a slight jiggle when gently moved.

5. Cool completely

Remove the pie from the oven and place it on a cooling rack. Let it cool for at least 1–2 hours before slicing so the custard can fully set.

6. Serve

Slice and serve at room temperature or chilled. It’s delicious on its own or with a small dollop of whipped cream.

💡 Tip

Avoid overbaking the custard. If the center becomes completely firm while still in the oven, the pie can develop a slightly grainy texture as it cools.

Creamy, silky, lightly spiced, and wonderfully old-fashioned! 🥧❤️
