When I showed Daniel the positive pregnancy test, he lifted me off the kitchen floor, laughing so hard that our neighbor banged on the wall. That day, everything seemed light, bright, almost unreal. We felt as though life was offering us an immense promise, and we were ready to receive it together.
A joy that has become twofold
Three weeks later, during the ultrasound, the technician turned the screen toward us and softly announced, « There are two. » Daniel immediately started joking, as he always did when he was happy. On the way home, he was already talking about two cribs, two car seats, and two education funds. Then he added, with that smile that always melted my worry:
« And a bigger coffee machine. That’s non-negotiable. »
I can still picture his enthusiasm, his way of turning fear into humor, as if nothing could truly touch us. What I didn’t know was that at the same time, another reality was silently taking hold in our lives.
The tests had been done in February. Daniel had already received the results. He had put them in the glove compartment of the car, like one locks away something too heavy to say aloud. His mother, Carol, learned the truth in March. He called her at a diner and, over barely touched coffees, he asked her only one thing:

« Don’t tell her mother. She’ll have nine months to be happy. That’s all I want. »
Carol respected his wishes. She remained silent during the baby shower, while we repainted the nursery, during the evenings when I complained about my swollen ankles and Daniel massaged my feet without a word. He had chosen to protect the joy to the very end, even while carrying his own pain in secret.
