My family held a lavish party on my property and forbade my children from entering.

« What is it? » he asked.

I placed the file on the time-worn picnic table outside the gate.

« The reason I told Mom I needed to meet someone about the west field. »

My mother’s gaze fell upon the driveway. « Who are you going to see? »

Before I could reply, the white rental van parked next to the barn opened.

A man in work boots got out, carrying an odometer. A woman with a camera followed him, then another man wearing a county identification badge.

Vanessa lowered her glass of wine.

« What are they doing here? »

I looked at my children, still standing in front of the house that had been presented to them as their family home.

Then I looked at the people who had decided that we didn’t belong.

« They are here, » I said, « to determine who actually has the right to stay. »

### Part 2

Vanessa stared at the team of investigators as if I had let strangers into her room.

Grant crossed the lawn first.

Grant crossed the lawn first. Tall and broad-shouldered, he was used to imposing his stature. He stopped near the picnic table, placed both hands on the wood, and leaned towards me.

« You brought county representatives to a private meeting? »

« I’ve scheduled an inspection. »

« Without asking anyone? »

« I told Mom. »

My mother pursed her lips. « You said someone was watching the west field. You never mentioned an inspection. »

« The email included the date, time, and subject. »

« I don’t read all the long emails you send me. »

That was true. My mother rarely read anything that might contain a bill, a due date, or an obligation.

Vanessa walked towards the white van. « They have to leave. »

The woman holding the camera gave him a polite smile. « We have permission from the property representative. »

« My father is the real estate agent. » Parenting

The woman glanced in my direction.

« No, ma’am. According to our documents, it is indeed Mrs. Bennett. »

Vanessa turned around so abruptly that wine spilled onto her hand.

Dad stood up from his chair. « Mara, that’s enough. Stop trying to impress strangers. »

The old instinct to withdraw into myself has awakened. It lay dormant somewhere beneath my ribs, nourished by years of assimilation through being labeled difficult every time I recalled facts.

I pressed my fingertips against the backrest

I pressed my fingertips against the backrest.

The northern retaining wall is collapsing.

“I’m not trying to impress anyone. The north retaining wall is collapsing.” Grant looked at the barn. Vanessa didn’t. “The barn’s fine,” she said. A chill ran down my spine. Grant shrugged. “The county inspector, who’d been pretending not to listen, stopped pretending.” Vanessa threw her hands up in the air. “Typical Mara.” My father strode stiffly toward me, furious. He was 64, but his anger still made me feel like a 15-year-old. His gaze shifted. That slight movement spoke volumes. The previous month, I’d received unusual calls from the insurance company. Someone had requested a duplicate of the property appraisal. A local bank had asked if I’d authorized a title search. When I’d questioned my father, he’d claimed it must have been a routine procedure. Inside was an application for a commercial line of credit.

The signature page bore my father’s name. Below it, a blank line awaited mine. I hadn’t yet told anyone that the bank had sent me a copy. Noah tugged at my sleeve. As he and Ellie turned away, Vanessa blocked their path with her foot. « Don’t come in with those bags. » Noah looked at his shoe, then at his face. « I sleep in the blue room, » he said quietly. « My boys are there, » Grant replied. The mention of my grandmother changed the atmosphere. Hawthorne Farm hadn’t originally belonged to my parents. It had belonged to my maternal grandmother, June Hawthorne, a small woman with silver hair who could fix a tractor, negotiate with a banker, and silence an argument with a mere raise of her eyebrow. Grandma June loved both my sister and me, but her trust was different for each of us. Vanessa received money, jewelry, and lavish birthday parties. I received keys.
