She had known exactly how much I would receive.
She had known the moment I became vulnerable.
She had known about Lily.
And suddenly, I understood why Tessa had called me.
She hadn’t wanted to hide Lily anymore.
She wanted something from me.
I called her back.
“You knew about my inheritance.”
Silence.
Then Tessa said,
“Of course.”
My stomach turned.
“You stole my daughter because of money?”
“No.”
Her voice became colder.
“We stole your daughter because of what your daughter would eventually inherit.”
I closed my eyes.
“How much?”
“Everything.”
My investigator looked at me.
I put the call on speaker.
Tessa continued.
“Your parents created a trust for their grandchildren. But there was one condition.”
I already knew.
“The child had to be alive.”
“Yes.”
My hands began shaking.
“If you knew Lily was alive, why hide her?”
“Because once you found her, the money would become hers.”
“And you wanted control of it.”
Tessa laughed.
“Exactly.”
I looked at Lily.
Six years old.
Small.
Innocent.
Used as a financial weapon by people who were supposed to protect her.
Then Tessa said something else.
“And there’s one more thing, Rowan.”
“What?”
“You should ask Maren why she knew about Lily before you did.”
My heart stopped.
“Maren died six years ago.”
“I know.”
“So how could she know?”
Tessa’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because Maren didn’t die six years ago.”
The call ended.
I stared at my phone.
My investigator slowly lowered his laptop.
“Rowan…”
“What?”
“We need to go back.”
“Why?”
He turned the screen toward me.
“I found a death certificate.”
I stared at the name.
Maren Whitmore.
Date of death: six years ago.
But underneath it was a second document.
A medical record from eighteen months later.
Same Social Security number.
Same fingerprints.
Different name.
My blood ran cold.
“She was alive.”
My investigator nodded.
“And someone has been paying her.”
“Who?”
He turned the screen.
The payments came from an account belonging to…
Ryan Montgomery.
I couldn’t breathe.
My ex-husband.
The man who had just watched his mother arrive at my mansion with two moving trucks.
The man who claimed he wanted nothing from me.
The man who had spent five years pretending he didn’t know about my family’s money.
He had been paying Maren.
All along.
And suddenly, the divorce wasn’t the end of my marriage.
It was the beginning of the truth.
I looked at Lily.
Then at my investigator.
“Find Maren.”
He nodded.
“I already did.”
My heart stopped.
“Where?”
He showed me a photograph.
Maren was standing outside a private clinic in Connecticut.
Taken three days ago.
And beside her…
was Ryan.
PART 5 — THE GATE CLOSED ON THEM FOREVER
I stared at the photograph.
Ryan.
Maren.
Standing together.
Alive.
Together.
After six years of lies.
For a moment, I couldn’t move.
Then my phone buzzed.
Victoria.
My attorney.
“Rowan, where are you?”
“I found Lily.”
There was silence.
“You found her?”
“Yes.”
“Is she safe?”
I looked at the little girl beside me.
“Yes.”
Victoria exhaled.
“Then come home.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because Patricia is still at your gate.”
I almost laughed.
After everything I had just learned, Patricia was still standing outside my mansion demanding entry.
“Is Ryan there?”
“No.”
“Good.”
I looked at Lily.
“I’m coming.”
When I arrived at the estate, the scene was even bigger than before.
The two moving trucks were still parked outside.
Patricia was shouting.
Brandon was arguing with the police.
Vanessa was still livestreaming.
And hundreds of people were watching online.
Then Patricia saw my car.
She smiled.
“There she is.”
I stepped out.
But this time, I wasn’t alone.
Victoria walked beside me.
My investigator followed.
And behind them came Lily and the woman who had raised her.
Patricia’s face changed.
“What is this?”
I looked directly at her.
“This is your granddaughter.”
The street went silent.
Vanessa lowered her phone.
Brandon stopped talking.
Patricia stared at Lily.
“No.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
“This is impossible.”
“No, Patricia.”
I held up the forged birth certificate.
“This is what was impossible.”
Victoria stepped forward.
“We have evidence of fraudulent financial documents, identity fraud, child abduction, and an attempted transfer of assets belonging to Ms. Rowan.”
Patricia’s face went pale.
“You can’t prove any of that.”
My investigator handed the police officer a folder.
“We can.”
The officer opened it.
His expression changed.
Then another police officer walked toward Patricia.
