Itchy Skin With Raised Bumps: Possible Causes, Warning Signs, and Treatment

Sudden itching accompanied by raised bumps on the skin can be uncomfortable and sometimes alarming. Although many rashes are caused by common skin conditions, certain symptoms may indicate an allergic reaction, an infection, or another medical problem that needs attention.

The important thing to know is that the appearance shown in the image does not, by itself, identify a specific disease. Several conditions can produce similar-looking bumps, and the speed at which they appear, their location, and other symptoms help determine the cause.

1. Hives (Urticaria)

Hives are a common cause of sudden itching and raised bumps. They may appear pink, red, or skin-colored and can develop almost anywhere on the body.

Common triggers include:

  • Certain foods or medications.
  • Infections.
  • Insect bites.
  • Heat, pressure, or sweating.
  • Sometimes, an unknown trigger.

Individual hives often change shape or disappear within 24 hours, although new ones may appear elsewhere.

Seek emergency medical attention if an itchy rash is accompanied by swelling of the tongue or throat, difficulty breathing, faintness, or trouble swallowing.

2. Contact Dermatitis
