PART 2 — THE COMMANDER’S SECRET
My father stared at the commander.
His lips moved, but no sound came out.
Finally, he whispered:
“Colonel?”
The commander smiled through tears.
“Yes, sir.”
Tristan looked confused.
“Colonel? Why would a military commander salute him?”
The officer turned toward the room.
“My name is Colonel Daniel Mercer. Twenty-seven years ago, Lieutenant James Evans saved my life.”
The room became completely silent.
“He was serving overseas when our convoy came under attack. I was trapped inside a burning vehicle. The rest of my unit had been forced back.”
He looked at my father.
“James went back for me.”
Dad shook his head.
“I only did what anyone would have done.”
“No,” Colonel Mercer said. “You did what almost nobody else was willing to do.”
He explained that my father had carried him nearly a mile through dangerous terrain while injured himself.
But the story didn’t end there.
“When we returned home,” the colonel continued, “James refused every award and every financial benefit offered to him.”
Tristan’s mother frowned.
“Why?”
The commander looked at her.
“Because he believed his duty wasn’t something he should be paid extra for.”
My father lowered his eyes.
“I had a family waiting for me.”
The colonel smiled.
“You also had another family.”
He reached into his uniform pocket.
Then he removed a small black box.
Inside was a military medal.
“My life exists because of this man.”
He held it up.
“For twenty-seven years, I have tried to find him.”
He turned toward my father.
“And yesterday, I finally did.”
My father looked confused.
“Why now?”
The colonel’s expression became serious.
“Because I discovered that the man who saved my life had spent the last twenty-seven years believing his sacrifice meant nothing.”
He looked around the room.
“So I came here to correct that.”
