1. Warm Water and Lemon
Lemon is a valuable and extremely effective ally for refreshing yellowed pillows. This simple method takes advantage of the whitening and refreshing properties of citrus fruit while requiring only water and lemon juice. It is particularly straightforward because the pillow is first soaked in the prepared solution and then washed afterward to remove the remaining stains and residues.
The important point is to prepare enough liquid for the pillow to be properly submerged. If part of the pillow remains above the solution, that area will not receive the same soaking treatment. For that reason, additional water can be used when necessary so that the pillow is completely covered.
What you need
- 2.5 liters of water
- 6 cups of lemon juice
- Soapy water for washing afterward
- Additional water if necessary to completely submerge the pillow
How to use the lemon method
- Bring the water to a boil. Start with 2.5 liters of water and bring it to a boil. This forms the base of the soaking solution that will be combined with the lemon juice.
- Add the lemon juice. Add 6 cups of lemon juice to the water. Make sure the lemon juice is distributed throughout the water so that the pillow will be exposed to the solution during soaking.
- Submerge the pillow. Place the yellowed pillow into the lemon water. The pillow should be completely immersed rather than only partially wet. If the prepared amount of liquid does not cover it sufficiently, add more water until the entire pillow is submerged.
- Leave it to soak. Allow the pillow to remain in the lemon water for about 2 hours. This soaking period gives the solution time to work on the yellowed areas and accumulated residues.
- Wash with soapy water. After soaking, wash the pillow with soapy water. Pay attention to the areas where yellow stains are most visible so that the cleaning step can remove the residues loosened during soaking.
- Rinse thoroughly. Once the pillow has been washed, rinse it carefully. The goal is to remove the soapy water and the remaining lemon solution rather than leaving cleaning residue trapped between the fibers.
- Dry the pillow. Finish by allowing the pillow to dry properly before putting it back into use.
Why complete soaking matters
One of the most important details in this method is keeping the pillow submerged. Yellowing is often spread across several areas rather than appearing as one isolated stain. Completely immersing the pillow allows the solution to reach the different sections of the material instead of treating only the most visible surface.
A pillow can also absorb liquid as it soaks, so it is worth making sure that it remains adequately surrounded by the solution. The original method specifically allows for additional water when necessary. The objective is not to change the treatment but simply to ensure that the pillow is fully covered.
Do not skip the washing step
The lemon soak is followed by washing for an important reason: soaking and washing serve different purposes within the method. After the pillow has spent about 2 hours in the lemon water, washing it with soapy water helps remove the stains and residues from the fabric.
For this reason, it is better not to treat the soak as the final step. Complete the process by washing, rinsing, and drying the pillow. Following the steps in their original order keeps the treatment simple and ensures that the pillow receives the complete cleaning process described here.
