Homemade Creamy Basil Pesto: Fresh, Flavorful, and Easy

If you’re looking for a delicious homemade sauce that transforms ordinary pasta into something special, this creamy basil pesto is a must-try! Made with fresh basil, garlic, Parmesan cheese, olive oil, and nuts, this vibrant green sauce is rich, fragrant, and incredibly versatile.

Perfect for spaghetti, chicken, sandwiches, and roasted vegetables, homemade pesto takes just a few minutes to prepare. Unlike store-bought sauces, you can adjust the ingredients to suit your taste and enjoy a fresh, homemade flavor.

Despite claims that certain herbs can act like natural morphine, basil pesto is a food, not a proven painkiller or substitute for medical treatment. However, it is a delicious way to add herbs and healthy fats to your meals.

Preparation Time

  • Preparation: 10 minutes
  • Cooking time: 10 minutes for the pasta
  • Total time: 20 minutes
  • Servings: 4 people

Ingredients

For the Homemade Basil Pesto

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves, washed and dried
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1/3 cup pine nuts or walnuts
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2–4 tablespoons water, as needed
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

For the Pasta

  • 350 g spaghetti
  • Water for boiling
  • Salt, for the pasta water
  • 1/4 cup reserved pasta water
  • Extra Parmesan cheese, for serving
  • Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Step 1: Prepare the Basil

Wash the fresh basil leaves thoroughly under cool running water.

Pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel or use a salad spinner. Removing excess water helps create a flavorful pesto with a better consistency.

Remove any tough stems and place the basil leaves in a food processor.

Step 2: Add the Garlic and Nuts

Add the garlic cloves and pine nuts or walnuts to the food processor.

Pulse several times until the ingredients are finely chopped.

For a deeper flavor, lightly toast the nuts in a dry pan over medium-low heat for 2–3 minutes, stirring frequently. Let them cool before blending.

Be careful not to burn the garlic or nuts, as this can make the sauce bitter.

Step 3: Add the Parmesan and Olive Oil

Add the grated Parmesan cheese and lemon juice to the food processor.

Pulse again while gradually pouring in the olive oil.

Blend until the ingredients form a thick, creamy green sauce.

Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed to ensure everything is evenly combined.

Step 4: Adjust the Consistency

Check the pesto’s texture.

If it is too thick, add water one tablespoon at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.

Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Taste the sauce and add more lemon juice or Parmesan if desired.

For an extra-creamy variation, blend in one or two tablespoons of cream cheese. This is optional and creates a richer sauce than traditional pesto.

Step 5: Cook the Spaghetti

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Add the spaghetti and cook according to the package instructions until al dente.

Before draining, reserve approximately 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water.

Drain the spaghetti without rinsing it.

Step 6: Combine the Pasta and Pesto

Place the warm spaghetti in a large bowl.

Add several spoonfuls of the homemade basil pesto and toss until the pasta is evenly coated.

Add a little reserved pasta water to help the sauce cling to the spaghetti and create a silky finish.

Avoid cooking the pesto over high heat, as excessive heat can dull the fresh basil flavor.

Step 7: Serve and Enjoy

Transfer the pesto spaghetti to serving plates.

Sprinkle with extra Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

For a heartier meal, serve with grilled chicken, roasted tomatoes, or sautéed mushrooms.

Enjoy immediately while the pasta is warm and flavorful!
