A simple homemade face mask made with egg yolk and petroleum jelly has been circulating online with dramatic claims that it can erase deep wrinkles and tighten sagging skin in just 30 minutes.
The reality is more modest—but that doesn’t mean a simple skincare routine can’t leave your skin looking smoother and more hydrated.
Petroleum jelly, also known as petrolatum, is an effective occlusive moisturizer. It forms a protective layer over the skin that helps reduce water loss. When dry skin becomes better hydrated, fine lines can temporarily appear less noticeable and the skin may look softer and more supple.
Egg yolk contains fats and proteins that can give a mask a temporary conditioning effect. However, there is no good evidence that an egg-yolk mask can permanently remove deep wrinkles or produce a facelift-like tightening effect in half an hour.
A Simple DIY Mask
If you want to try the combination as a moisturizing treatment, keep the preparation simple.
You’ll need:
- 1 egg yolk
- ½ teaspoon plain petroleum jelly
- A clean small bowl
- A clean cosmetic brush or your fingertips
Step 1: Separate the egg yolk from the white and place the yolk in a clean bowl.
Step 2: Add a small amount of petroleum jelly and mix thoroughly until the ingredients are combined.
Step 3: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat the skin dry.
Step 4: Apply a thin layer to the face, avoiding the eyelids, eyelashes, lips and areas of irritated or broken skin.
Step 5: Leave it on for approximately 10–15 minutes rather than expecting an instant wrinkle-removal effect.
Step 6: Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water and gently pat your face dry.
Step 7: Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer afterward if your skin feels dry.
What You May Notice
The most realistic result is softer, more hydrated-looking skin. Because hydration can temporarily plump the outermost layer of skin, small lines may look less prominent for a short period.
Deep wrinkles, however, don’t disappear permanently after one application. Aging involves changes in collagen, elastin and the structure of the skin, and those changes cannot be reversed by a kitchen mask overnight.
A Few Important Precautions
Raw egg can contain bacteria, so avoid getting the mixture near your eyes or mouth and wash your hands and any utensils thoroughly afterward. Don’t apply it to broken, inflamed or infected skin.
Petroleum jelly is generally well tolerated, but anyone with very sensitive or acne-prone skin should patch-test first and stop if irritation occurs.
For longer-term protection against visible aging, daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, regular moisturization and evidence-based skincare ingredients such as retinoids have considerably more support than DIY masks.
So, while the egg-yolk and petroleum-jelly mask may provide a temporary hydrated and smoother appearance, claims that it permanently erases deep wrinkles or creates a “30-minute facelift” are exaggerated.
