Baking Soda for Dull Skin? A Gentler Nighttime Routine for a Fresher-Looking Face

As the skin gets older, it can naturally lose moisture and elasticity, making the complexion look dull, dry, uneven, or tired by the end of the day. After 65, changes in the skin barrier can also make harsh home remedies more irritating than they were when you were younger.

Baking soda is often promoted online as a cheap facial exfoliant that can instantly remove dull skin. However, baking soda is alkaline and can disrupt the skin’s natural barrier, particularly when used frequently or left on the face overnight. Instead of applying baking soda directly to the skin, a gentler nighttime routine can provide the soft, refreshed feeling many people are looking for.

For this simple routine, you will need a fragrance-free facial moisturizer and a small amount of plain petroleum jelly.

Begin by washing your face with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Avoid scrubbing aggressively, especially around the cheeks, nose, and eyes.

Pat your face gently with a clean towel, leaving the skin slightly damp.

Apply a small amount of your fragrance-free moisturizer across the forehead, cheeks, chin, and neck. Look for a moisturizer containing ingredients such as ceramides, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid if your skin is dry.

Allow the moisturizer to settle for a few minutes.

Next, take a very small amount of petroleum jelly and gently press it onto the driest areas of the face. You do not need to cover your entire face with a thick layer. The purpose is to help reduce moisture loss and keep the skin feeling comfortable overnight.

Pay particular attention to dry areas around the cheeks and mouth, while avoiding direct contact with the eyes.

Leave the routine on overnight and gently cleanse your face in the morning.

For people over 65, this simple approach can be more suitable for maintaining the skin barrier than repeatedly applying harsh kitchen ingredients. Well-hydrated skin can temporarily appear smoother, softer, and more radiant, although a moisturizer cannot permanently remove wrinkles, age spots, or sagging skin.

If uneven pigmentation or age spots are your main concern, daily sun protection is especially important. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher during the daytime and protect your face from excessive sun exposure.

A consistent anti-aging skincare routine can also include professionally formulated ingredients such as retinol or other retinoids. These products may help improve the appearance of fine lines, uneven texture, and other visible signs of skin aging over time. They should be introduced gradually because mature or sensitive skin can become irritated.

Avoid using baking soda together with lemon juice, vinegar, or other acidic ingredients on your face. These combinations can increase irritation and may damage the skin barrier.

If you still want to experiment with a new skincare product, test a small amount on an inconspicuous area first. Stop using it if you develop persistent burning, redness, swelling, itching, or a rash.

A dull complexion does not necessarily mean your skin needs a strong exfoliating treatment. Sometimes the skin simply needs more hydration, gentle cleansing, adequate sleep, and protection from environmental damage.

Instead of trying to strip the skin with baking soda overnight, focus on replenishing moisture and protecting the skin barrier. With consistent care, mature skin can look healthier, smoother, and more radiant without relying on harsh homemade remedies or expensive spa treatments.
