Baking Soda for Dark Spots and Wrinkles: What Really Works?

Baking soda is a common household ingredient, and you may have seen viral posts claiming that it can erase dark spots, wrinkles, and dark circles in just five minutes.

The reality is more nuanced.

Baking soda cannot permanently erase wrinkles or pigmentation in minutes. In fact, applying it directly to the face can irritate the skin because it is alkaline and can disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier.

Why Does Baking Soda Sometimes Make Skin Look Different?

When baking soda is mixed with water, it creates a mildly alkaline paste that can temporarily remove surface oils and dead skin cells.

This may make the skin feel smoother or look slightly brighter for a short time. But that temporary effect is very different from actually removing pigmentation or reversing wrinkles.

Repeated use can cause:

  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Burning or stinging
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Skin-barrier damage

And irritation can sometimes make dark spots more noticeable, especially in people prone to post-inflammatory pigmentation.

What Can Actually Help Dark Spots?

For uneven pigmentation, proven skincare ingredients are a much better choice.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C can help brighten uneven-looking skin and provides antioxidant protection.

Niacinamide

Niacinamide is commonly used to improve the appearance of uneven skin tone while supporting the skin barrier.

Retinoids

Retinoids can improve skin texture and the appearance of fine lines over time. They should be introduced gradually because they can initially cause irritation.

Sunscreen

This is one of the most important steps.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher can help prevent existing dark spots from becoming darker and reduce additional sun-related skin aging.
