Little by little, he started listening to it outside of work as well.
Lucía told him that she had raised Sofía alone since she was a child and that, for years, she had worked double shifts so she wouldn’t have to change her school, since it was located near her home. Alejandro spoke about the accident, but not the medical details. He talked about what followed: the rage at having had to ask for help, the shame of feeling watched, and how easily he had let his pain overwhelm him with anger.
“Before, you used to greet everyone by name,” Lucía reminded her one evening as they were going through lists for a workshop. “Then you stopped.”
Alejandro lowered his eyes.
« I thought that if I kept my distance, no one would be able to see me as weak. »
« Distance also hurts others. »
There was no reproach in his voice. That made it even more painful.
Alejandro began to slightly modify his habits. He started having lunch with some of the staff members on certain days. He inquired about their families. He accepted the help offered without getting irritated. He even resumed the rehabilitation sessions he had abandoned, not hoping for a miracle, but because he had understood that taking care of his body was not an admission of failure.
Sofía became omnipresent. She entered his office without knowing the hierarchies, left drawings on his desk and involved him in decisions that no board of directors would have considered important.
« The library chairs are ugly, » she said one day.
« That’s a very technical argument, » replied Alejandro.
« And they scratch too. »
They replaced them.
A month later, at the official opening, families from different neighborhoods in Monterrey and its surrounding area gathered. There was no red carpet. Children played songs they were still learning. Mothers had brought food. Several employees, who had previously worked there without ever speaking to Alejandro, sat near him.
The local press has started asking questions about the project.
Some old acquaintances tried to come back.
One of the men who had ignored him at the gala asked for a meeting and arrived talking about social partnerships, corporate social responsibility, and opportunities for collaboration.
Alejandro listened.
« Why now? » he asked.
The man took too long to respond.
Alejandro did not humiliate him. Nor did he pretend to believe him.
« If you want to help me, you can. But here, nobody buys my support. »
This phrase has been circulating among the city’s shopkeepers.
As the project progressed, the trust between Alejandro and Lucía blossomed into affection. It wasn’t instantaneous; there were no grand gestures. This feeling revealed itself through late-night conversations, disagreements resolved respectfully, and small, everyday moments.
One afternoon, Sofía took Lucía’s hand and then Alejandro’s.
« Now you really look like a team, » she said.
Lucia became nervous. Alexander smiled.
That night, he couldn’t stop thinking about that word.
Team.
For years, he had had partners, assistants, advisors, and lawyers. But rarely had he felt that someone remained by his side without wanting to profit from his name.
A few weeks later, in the garden, Alejandro spoke frankly to Lucía.
« I don’t want to confuse you or jeopardize what we have built here. »
She remained silent.
« But you matter to me. »
Lucía looked at him calmly.
« You matter to me too. »
« Alejandro. »
She smiled.
« Alejandro. »
They did not begin a relationship immediately. Lucía made it clear that she did not want to be seen as a charity case or as the woman « saved » by a rich man.
« If things were to change between us, it would be because we were equals on what truly matters. »
“Respect, decisions and freedom,” he replied. For illustrative purposes only
« Exactly. »
Months later, no one at the center doubted Lucía’s authority. She had proven her competence, patience, and firmness. Alejandro, for his part, had stopped using work as a shield.
When they decided to make their relationship official, they did so without making waves.
A year after that gala, they organized a small ceremony in the garden of the residence. Parents, staff, teachers, and many children from the center were present. Sofía carried a bouquet of yellow flowers and had ensured that the same waltz was played as at that first event.
When the music started, Alejandro looked at Sofía.
« Again? »
« Again. »
The young girl took his hand, and together they headed towards the center of the hall, where this time no one looked away.
Alejandro gently swiveled his chair. Sofía did an exaggerated pirouette. The children began to imitate them. Lucía approached and took Alejandro’s other hand.
The place that, a year before, was filled with powerful people and devoid of humanity, was now full of noise, imperfections, and people who really wanted to be there.
Alejandro looked around him.
He no longer needed to know who respected him for his money.
He knew it from those who remained when there was nothing left to gain.
And Sofía, with her usual simplicity, summed up in a single sentence everything that this house had learned:
« When someone is alone, you don’t just look at them from afar. You make room for them. »
Alejandro shook Lucía’s hand while the music continued to play.
He had lost the use of his legs, but not his worth. What he had lost, temporarily, was the ability to recognize himself without the approval of others.
And that night, he understood something he had never learned while negotiating millions: dignity does not disappear with bodily changes. It disappears when a person accepts that others decide their worth.
In this hall where once everyone avoided looking at him, Alejandro was no longer the rejected man.
He was simply a man surrounded by people.
And in the end, it proved to be much harder to acquire and much more valuable to keep.
