Over time, plastic breaks down in water. It does not disappear. It fragments into tiny particles called microplastics, which drift through the water column before settling on the ocean floor, even in the most remote places on Earth.
These particles can release chemical pollutants into marine ecosystems. From there, they may affect the food chain.
And that chain eventually leads back to us.
Solutions Exist, and Action Matters
There is still good news: solutions are growing.
Reusable alternatives, stronger recycling systems, and regulations on disposable plastics are spreading around the world. In France, the gradual ban on single-use plastics is one step in the right direction.
Small actions matter when they are multiplied: refusing a plastic bag, using a reusable water bottle, sorting waste correctly, and choosing products with less packaging.
A plastic bag at the bottom of the Mariana Trench is not just waste.
It is a warning.
The deepest ocean on Earth has sent us a message. Now we have to decide whether we are willing to hear it.
