The Onion Method: What It Can—and Cannot—Do for Blood Sugar and Circulation

Onions are a nutritious food that can certainly be part of a healthy diet. They contain compounds such as quercetin and sulfur-containing compounds, which are being studied for their potential effects on metabolic and cardiovascular health.

However, there is no reliable evidence that drinking an onion preparation at night can make blood-sugar spikes “vanish,” cure circulation problems, or work faster than prescription medication. The dramatic before-and-after claims commonly used in social-media posts are not supported by good clinical evidence.

🧅 A Simple Onion Drink

If you enjoy onions and want to include them in your diet, you can make a mild preparation:

Ingredients

  • ½ small red or yellow onion
  • 1 cup of water
  • A small piece of fresh ginger (optional)
  • A squeeze of lemon (optional)

Preparation

  1. Peel and finely slice the onion.
  2. Bring 1 cup of water to a gentle simmer.
  3. Add the onion and simmer for about 5–10 minutes.
  4. Strain and allow it to cool.
  5. Add a little lemon or ginger if desired.

You can drink it as a food-based beverage, but there is no established “dose” or 3-day/7-day protocol proven to treat diabetes or improve circulation.
