5 Household Appliances You Should Unplug or Switch Off to Help Lower Your Electricity Bill

Phone chargers are often left plugged into wall outlets long after a device has finished charging. A modern charger with nothing connected usually consumes very little electricity, but leaving multiple adapters plugged in unnecessarily is still an easy habit to change.

How to save energy:

  1. Disconnect chargers when they are not needed.
  2. Avoid leaving cables and adapters scattered around outlets.
  3. Replace damaged, unusually hot, or poor-quality chargers.
  4. Charge your phone on a hard, ventilated surface rather than under bedding.
  5. Use reputable chargers that meet the requirements of your device.

Unplugging an unused charger will not normally transform your electricity bill, but it helps eliminate small amounts of wasted energy and keeps your charging area organized.

3. Microwave Ovens and Coffee Makers

Some microwaves continue displaying a digital clock even when they are not cooking. Coffee makers and other kitchen appliances may also have standby displays, timers, or automatic functions that consume electricity.

Steps to reduce unnecessary usage:

  1. Check whether your microwave has a clock display that remains on continuously.
  2. Switch off the appliance when it is not needed, if doing so is practical.
  3. Unplug compatible small appliances when they are completely cool and not in use.
  4. Turn off coffee makers and similar devices after preparing your drink.
  5. Choose energy-efficient appliances when replacing older models.

Remember that an appliance’s display does not necessarily mean it consumes a large amount of electricity. Check the manufacturer’s specifications before deciding which devices deserve the most attention.

4. Desktop Computers, Printers, and Office Equipment

Computers, printers, monitors, and speakers can contribute to unnecessary electricity consumption when left running or in standby mode for long periods.

A desktop computer that stays on all night may consume considerably more energy than a small charger, depending on its components and workload.

What you should do:

  1. Shut down your computer when you will not use it for an extended period.
  2. Enable automatic sleep settings during periods of inactivity.
  3. Turn off external monitors when you finish working.
  4. Switch off printers when they are not needed, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  5. Avoid leaving unnecessary accessories powered on throughout the night.

If you work from home, these changes can also reduce the amount of electricity consumed during long periods of inactivity.

5. Washing Machines and Other Laundry Appliances

Washing machines may consume small amounts of standby electricity when their displays or electronic controls remain active. However, the electricity used to heat water and run a washing cycle is generally much more important than the standby consumption.

How to make your laundry routine more energy-efficient:

  1. Switch off the machine after completing a cycle.
  2. Use cold-water washing when suitable for your clothes and detergent.
  3. Run full loads without exceeding the manufacturer’s recommended capacity.
  4. Choose an efficient washing program for lightly soiled clothes.
  5. Avoid unnecessary high-temperature cycles.

You do not need to unplug your washing machine after every load if its plug is difficult to access. Switching it off according to the manufacturer’s instructions is usually more practical.

An Important Note About Refrigerators and Other Major Appliances

Refrigerators and freezers should generally remain plugged in because they need continuous electricity to preserve food. Unplugging them to save energy can cause food to spoil and may create additional risks.

Likewise, never unplug a medical device or essential equipment simply to reduce your electricity bill.

For appliances that must remain powered, focus instead on maintenance, appropriate temperature settings, good ventilation, and choosing energy-efficient models.
