3-Ingredient Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwiches

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for a few minutes.

Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.

Place a slice of cheese between two pieces of bread, keeping the buttered sides facing outward. Repeat to make four sandwiches.

Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Don’t overcrowd the basket.

Air fry for about 4–5 minutes, then carefully flip the sandwiches. Continue cooking for another 3–5 minutes, or until the bread is beautifully golden and crispy and the cheese is completely melted.

Remove from the air fryer and let them rest for a minute or two before serving. The cheese will be incredibly hot!

Tips for the Best Grilled Cheese

Use a good melting cheese such as cheddar, American, Monterey Jack, Colby, or a combination of cheeses. For an especially gooey sandwich, use freshly grated cheese instead of very thick slices.

Don’t use too much butter. A thin coating is enough to create that beautiful golden crust without making the bread greasy.

Keep an eye on the sandwiches during the final few minutes because air fryers can cook at different speeds.

For an extra-crispy crust, allow the sandwiches to cook until the edges are deeply golden and the cheese is visibly melted.

Serve these hot with tomato soup, a simple salad, pickles, or your favorite dipping sauce.

Three ingredients, a few minutes, and you’ve got a crispy, buttery grilled cheese with that irresistible melted-cheese center. No wonder my husband keeps asking for them!
