Fried Green Tomatoes

Step 1: Slice the Tomatoes

  1. Wash the green tomatoes.
  2. Slice them into ½ inch thick rounds.
  3. Sprinkle lightly with salt and let them sit for 5 minutes.

This helps remove extra moisture.

Step 2: Prepare the Breading Station

Prepare three bowls:

Bowl 1:

  • Flour

Bowl 2:

  • Eggs
  • Milk
    Whisk together.

Bowl 3:

  • Cornmeal
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Paprika

Step 3: Bread the Tomatoes

  1. Coat each tomato slice in flour.
  2. Dip into the egg mixture.
  3. Coat in the cornmeal mixture.

Press gently so the coating sticks well.

Step 4: Heat the Oil

  1. Heat about ½ inch of oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  2. The oil should reach about 175°C (350°F).

Step 5: Fry the Tomatoes

  1. Carefully place the breaded tomato slices in the hot oil.
  2. Fry for 2–3 minutes per side.
  3. Cook until golden brown and crispy.

Step 6: Drain

  1. Remove the tomatoes and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.

🍽️ Serving Ideas

Serve fried green tomatoes with:

  • Ranch dressing
  • Garlic aioli
  • Remoulade sauce
  • Fresh herbs

They also taste amazing in sandwiches or burgers.

✅ Chef Tip:
Use firm green tomatoes (not ripe red ones). They stay firm and give the best crispy texture when fried.
