Cockroaches can be difficult to eliminate because they hide in cracks, behind appliances, under sinks, and in other dark, warm areas. Seeing one cockroach can also mean that others are nearby, so dealing with the source is more effective than simply killing the insects you can see.
A popular homemade approach uses boric acid, but it should be handled carefully. Boric acid is a pesticide and can be harmful if swallowed or inhaled in significant amounts, especially by children and pets. It should never be placed where food is prepared or where children or animals can reach it.
A safer approach is to use commercial cockroach bait stations or gel baits that are specifically labeled for household cockroach control. Follow the product’s label exactly and place the bait in cracks, crevices, and other areas where cockroaches are active.
Before using any bait, make your home less attractive to cockroaches. Keep food in sealed containers, clean crumbs and spills promptly, empty garbage regularly, repair leaking pipes, and avoid leaving standing water overnight. Pay particular attention to areas underneath the refrigerator, stove, and kitchen sink.
You can also reduce hiding places by sealing cracks around pipes, cabinets, baseboards, and doors. A clean and dry kitchen makes it considerably harder for cockroaches to find food and water.
If you choose to use a boric-acid product, use only a product legally labeled for pest control and follow its instructions. Do not mix boric acid into food or make bait balls from household ingredients unless the product label specifically permits that use. Never place pesticide mixtures near dishes, countertops, children’s toys, pet bowls, or food.
For a serious infestation, professional pest control is often the most reliable option, particularly when cockroaches continue appearing despite cleaning and baiting.
The most effective strategy is simple: remove food and water sources, eliminate hiding places, seal entry points, and use properly labeled cockroach bait safely and consistently.
