5 Plant-Based Protein Foods That Can Help Support Muscle After 60

Maintaining muscle becomes increasingly important as we get older. After 60, muscle mass can gradually decline, especially when daily activity decreases or meals don’t provide enough protein. The good news is that you don’t have to rely entirely on meat to support strong, active muscles.

Several plant foods provide substantial amounts of protein and can be incorporated into everyday meals. They won’t magically build muscle overnight, and most do not contain more protein than chicken gram-for-gram, but they can be excellent additions to a balanced diet.

1. Pumpkin Seeds

The pumpkin seeds shown in the image are a particularly useful plant-based protein food. They also provide magnesium, iron, zinc, and healthy fats.

A small handful can be added to:

  • Oatmeal
  • Yogurt
  • Salads
  • Soups
  • Smoothies
  • Homemade energy bites

Because pumpkin seeds are calorie-dense, a moderate portion is usually enough.

2. Soybeans and Tofu

Soy is one of the most useful plant protein sources because it provides a complete protein, meaning it contains all nine essential amino acids.

Tofu, tempeh, and cooked soybeans can be used in place of meat in many meals.

Try adding tofu to stir-fries, soups, vegetable dishes, or salads. Tempeh can also be grilled or pan-seared and served with vegetables and whole grains.

3. Lentils

Lentils are inexpensive, filling, and rich in both protein and fiber.

A bowl of lentil soup can make a satisfying meal when combined with vegetables and a source of whole grains.

You can also use lentils in:

  • Salads
  • Stews
  • Curries
  • Vegetable burgers
  • Stuffed vegetables

Their fiber content can also help make meals more filling.

4. Chickpeas

Chickpeas are another convenient source of plant protein.

They can be blended into hummus, added to salads, mixed into soups, or roasted until crisp for a simple snack.

For a balanced meal, combine chickpeas with vegetables and whole grains such as brown rice or whole-grain bread.

5. Peas

Green peas are an easy way to add additional protein to ordinary meals.

Add them to rice, soups, pasta, omelets, vegetable dishes, or stews. Frozen peas are particularly convenient because they can be stored for long periods and cooked quickly.
