Chocolate Depression Cake

Ingredients:

For the cake:

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1/3 cup vegetable oil
1 cup water

For the frosting:

2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk (or cream)
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit . Grease an 8×8 square pan.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda.
In a separate bowl, mix together the vanilla extract, white vinegar, vegetable oil, and water.
When there are no more lumps in the batter, add the wet components to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.
Scatter the batter evenly in the pan that has been oiled.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean, in a preheated oven.
Let the cake cool fully before applying the icing.

To make the frosting:

In a small saucepan or microwave-safe dish, melt the butter.
Stir in the cocoa powder until a thick paste forms.
Transfer the chocolate mixture to a medium-sized mixing bowl.
With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract. Stir until each and every item is combined.

Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat the frosting for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and creamy.
Spread the frosting on top of the cooled cake.
Enjoy your delicious homemade Chocolate Depression Cake! It’s a simple and satisfying treat that you can enjoy any time.
