Ginger for Eye Health: What It Can—and Can’t—Do

Ginger has been used for centuries as a flavorful ingredient and traditional remedy. Because it contains antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, it has attracted interest among people looking for natural ways to support overall health.

However, there is an important distinction between supporting eye health and curing cataracts.

There is currently no reliable evidence that drinking ginger juice or a ginger-based remedy can dissolve cataracts, restore clear vision within seven days, or replace cataract surgery.

Why Ginger Gets Attention

Ginger contains naturally occurring compounds such as gingerols and shogaols, which have antioxidant properties. Antioxidants help protect cells from oxidative stress, which is one of many processes involved in aging.

Including ginger in a balanced diet can therefore be a reasonable choice for general nutrition.

You can add fresh ginger to:

  • Warm tea
  • Smoothies
  • Soups
  • Stir-fries
  • Homemade dressings
  • Fresh fruit drinks

What About Cataracts?

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens. As the lens becomes less transparent, people may experience blurry or hazy vision, increased sensitivity to light, faded colors, or difficulty seeing at night.

Unfortunately, a homemade ginger drink cannot remove an established cataract.

If blurry vision is persistent or getting worse, an eye examination is much more useful than experimenting with a home remedy. An eye-care professional can determine whether cataracts—or another eye condition—is responsible.
