German Bread Recipe

Ingredients:

500g all-purpose flour
300ml lukewarm water
1 packet (7g) active dry yeast
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Sesame or poppy seeds are optional for the garnish.

Instructions:

Activate the yeast: In a small bowl, dissolve the sugar in the lukewarm water. After dispersing the yeast over the water, leave it for five to ten minutes, or until it foams.
Get the dough ready: Flour and salt should be combined in a large mixing dish. Make a well in the center and pour in the activated yeast mixture along with the vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
Knead the dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Add more flour if needed.
Let it rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours or until doubled in size.
Shape the bread: Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air bubbles. Roll out the dough to form an oval or round loaf, then transfer it to a baking sheet covered with paper.

Final rise and preheat: Cover the shaped loaf with a kitchen towel and let it rise for 30-45 minutes. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
Bake the bread: Brush the top of the loaf with water and sprinkle sesame seeds or poppy seeds if desired. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes in a preheated oven, or until the bottoms sound hollow when tapped.

Cool and enjoy: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 15-20 minutes before slicing. Serve with butter, cheese, cold cuts, or your favorite spreads.
