Confronting Mark
“Were you seriously just giving your mother my PIN?” I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper as I stood in the dim light of our kitchen. My heart raced, pounding like a drum in my ears.
Mark leaned against the counter, arms crossed, a laugh escaping his lips. “Oh, come on, Sarah. It was just a joke. You know how my mom is.”
“A joke? You think that’s funny?” I shot back, feeling the anger ignite within me. “You just handed her access to our savings—the money that’s supposed to be for our future!”
“She’d never do anything without your permission, right?”
His casual tone did nothing to ease the tension curling around my gut. “It doesn’t matter. It’s the principle of it, Mark! How could you even think it was okay?”
“You’re overreacting, babe. Mom wouldn’t dream of asking for even a dime. She’s just… concerned.”
I wanted to believe him. But every fiber of my being screamed that something darker was at play. “Concerned about what? The money she thinks belongs to us? You need to understand how serious this is!”
He stared at me, the corners of his mouth twitching. “You’re taking this too far. It’s just family.”
“Family? This is my inheritance! My future!” My voice cracked, the weight of betrayal heavy in the air. I felt the dread settle over me like a suffocating blanket, my mind racing with all the implications of what I overheard.
