Confronting the Manipulator
“How could you?” I demanded, my voice barely above a whisper as I glared at Rosalind, still reeling from the shock of my own actions. She stood there, incredulous, her eyes darting between Daphne and me.
“What’s wrong with you?” she sneered, brushing the soaked fabric of her dress. “Daphne should be grateful. She’s leeching off my son while she lounges at home.”
My heart pounded in my chest, and I could feel the walls of my carefully constructed family collapsing around me. “Grateful? For what? For this?” I gestured to Daphne, crumpled on the floor. “For being treated like some kind of servant?”
Rosalind crossed her arms defiantly. “She needs to know her place. You’ve sacrificed too much for her to let her think she’s on equal footing.”
“Sacrificed? You mean you’ve manipulated me, twisted my perception of what family means!” My words tasted bitter, each one a reveal of the truth I now grasped. “I’ve let you poison our home.”
Rosalind’s mouth tightened, but I pressed on, a flood of clarity washing over me. “You’ve convinced me that your way is the only way, haven’t you?”
With the weight of realization crashing down, I glanced back at Daphne. Her eyes were filled with fear, a reflection of the shame I’d unknowingly placed upon her. “I won’t let this continue,” I murmured, feeling my resolve harden. “I will protect her.”
